The tweet above highlighted doublespeak by some edtech vendors. They say one thing, but do another.

This got me thinking about other claims by vendors, policymakers, or administrators in schools and higher education. I share my thoughts in this format: What they say followed by how reality bites.

Anytime, anywhere: Pending schedules we dictate and only if you have access to reliable broadband.

Blended: Loosely combining off and online modes of instruction instead of actually implementing seamless learning.

Free: You pay for it one way or another, i.e., your data in the form of personal information.

Learning analytics: Surveillance for planning and punishment instead of progressive pedagogy.

On-demand: What they decide and provide, not what you want and when you need it.

Rigorous [insert-name-of-process]: Reducing complex practice (e.g., facilitating online learning) to simplistic, single, or invalid measures (surveys based on self-reporting).

These are just a few doublespeak examples I can think of now. But there are probably many more. And there are even more people fooling themselves and others into thinking they are delivering what is labelled on the box.
