Mitchell and the moon

David Mitchell is one of my favourite British comedians. In this QI segment on moon-landing conspiracies, he said

We are in trouble as a species if people refuse believe in things they couldn’t actually do themselves.

His words might seem prescient given what we know of people in the age of COVID-19 and climate change.

There are some who do not trust the people behind the SARS-CoV2 vaccines even though the processes of development, testing, and data analysis are openly shared. There are others who do not believe the life work of professionals who provide evidence that we are responsible for catastrophic climate change and that we must change our behaviours now.

Why? Because the people that Mitchell commented on cannot look beyond their own noses or think outside their own bubbles.

The warning is for all of us. If half of us choose not to learn and change, then the burden falls on the rest of us to educate and be agents of change. If we ignore the problem, we become part of the problem.
