Squashing bad ideas

Posted on: September 24, 2020

Earlier this month, I read a tweet from an educator who lamented how his ideas were shot down by someone else.

I can understand his disappointment. No one likes their energy and enthusiasm sucked away even before they can start. No one likes being told they might be wrong.

But here’s the rub: Some ideas are just bad. Depending on how the comment was delivered, it might have been a friendly warning or a withering takedown.

The delivery does not take away from the fact that the enthusiastic and energetic idea could have been wrong. The cruelty of the feedback might have been kindness in the long run.
