Another dot in the blogosphere?

1Password alert

Posted on: July 11, 2020

This was a welcome update to my favourite password manager, 1Password — it now warns me if old passwords might be compromised.

For example, the app warned me about my password for Facebook Workplace with this message: “Vulnerability Alert – Compromised Website”.

Warning from 1Password about Facebook Workplace.

I created an account as part of a collaborator’s initiative to try to create “community” in 2018. I did not see the point under the circumstances then, but supported the effort anyway by creating an account and password. The effort failed to take off and I promptly forgot about the account. But thanks to 1Password, I can take action.

Disclaimer: I have not been asked to promote 1Password nor am I compensated in any way for writing this.

I have more than enough to say about not using Facebook. I have not said enough about password management, so I focus on that.

When I headed a department at a university, I paid for the app so that all my staff could get on board with good password management. Even though using passwords is a flawed idea (the weakest link being human users) it is the most common security measure. So an app that manages our passwords securely and looks for compromised passwords is essential for modern life.

I might compare what 1Password now does to COVID-19 measures. It reminds us of good practices as you go about our business and warns us of areas we frequent that are now dangerous.
