How not to Q; how to A

Posted on: April 21, 2019

It is not secret that I follow the US political scene like I follow Game of Thrones. The former is like the latter except with more fantasy and fewer dragons.

I cannot help but watch videos through the lens of an educator. The segment I highlighted is a good example of how NOT to ask a question and also how to answer that sort of question.

The type of bad question is one where the asker already has a fixed (wrong or ignorant) answer. It is not asked to clarify or to learn. It is not based on listening, but on badgering.

The good sort of answering in this context is remaining focused, coming prepared, and persisting until you get your point across. It does not preach to convert; it leaves the audience to change or make up their own minds.
