Dog-earring some differences

Posted on: February 22, 2015

This entry is the equivalent of dog-earring a page of a book. It is to remind me of some differences I might want to write about.

I have already reflected briefly about the differences between a teacher and an educator. I have also distinguished between gamification and game-based learning.

Here are some other things that quite a few teachers assume to be synonymous but are actually very different:

  • pupil, student, learner
  • training, professional development, personal learning (network)
  • assessment and evaluation
  • schooling and education
  • tweet, posting, entry

Knowing what these differences are is not just an exercise in semantics. They are indicative of philosophies, belief systems, and mindsets. These shape behaviours.

Sticks and stones may break bones. Words start or stop these fights.
