Revisiting experience

Posted on: January 27, 2009

Last semester I wrote an open letter with the slightly more senior members of my classes in mind. I did this because I sensed their anxiety in the early part of the semester.

Instead of rewriting the letter, I reread it, and I think that what I had to say then applies this semester.

I have two “younger” classes and two “older” ones, but I hope they all get the message.

Dear Dr Tan,

I think it’d be good if you could place emphasis on not “falling into the ‘cool tool’ trap”.

IMHO, this is the most important thing everyone should remember, regardless of whether one is dealing with ICT or educational pedagogies.

There is no point in implementing something for the sake of doing so, or just because it seems like a trendy thing to do. Activities or policies must be effective and efficient, and must meet the needs of the ‘customer’, if not, said activities or policies face the possibility of becoming archaic and/or obsolete very fast.

@Laremy: Most definitely. I think I emphasized this with your group last semester and I’ll repeat that chorus again this semester! I just hope that my classes do not get tired of my tune! 😉

But the fact of the matter is that some folks will not realize what this means until they are teachers and are attempting to integrate technology.
