I am maintaining this page as a record of the extensions that I use to customise my Firefox browser. As I use an Apple MacBook Pro and a tablet PC, a few extensions are different on each laptop. Otherwise, the extensions are cross-platform.
Adblock Plus
A must-have to block unwanted image, Flash and iframe ads. It removes visual clutter and speeds the loading of Web pages by not loading unwanted ads.
Auto Copy
Automatically copies selected text to the clipboard.
Better Gcal, Better Greader and Better Gmail2
Enables cool and useful tweaks to Google Calendar, Reader and Gmail.
Here’s a LifeHacker tip on creating small and ever-present tabs for these useful tools.
Cooliris (formerly known as PicLens)
An almost 3-D way of viewing photos online. It is only a matter of time when Flickr and Picasa take notice!
Copy Plain Text
Fixed version linked above is compatible with FF3.5. Great for stripping all formatting from text in Web pages before pasting into blogs, wikis, Word, etc.
Deepest Sender (not compatible with FF3.5)
I use this to make entries to this blog directly from the Firefox sidebar instead of having to log on to WordPress first.
Update: Duh, there’s ScribeFire!
Download Sort
This nifty extension organises my downloads by putting different files in different predefined folders.
Download Statusbar
This extension puts the file download information into the status bar where it is always in view but not obstructively so.
Download Helper
Also known as Video Download Helper. Downloads just about any streaming Flash-based video into offline FLV format.
EasyGestures
Works only on the PC. This allows me to turn the right-click contextual menu into a pie-menu. Every option is now equidistant!
FEBE
For backing up my Firefox data.
Firefox PDF Plugin for Mac OS X
Only for the Mac and for Firefox 3. Normally, Firefox either saves PDFs or launches Preview to view PDFs instead of opening them directly in the browser. This plugin opens PDFs in the browser.
Update: Nodobe (not compatible with FF3.5) is a Firefox plugin for Mac, Linux, and Windows platforms. It claims to be able to open “38 different document and file image types” without the bloat of plugins in Adobe and Microsoft.
FlashGot
Links Firefox to my download manager clients on the PC (Orbit) or Mac (Speed Download/iGetter).
GeckoTIP
Only for my tablet PC so that I have additional features, e.g., left side scrollbar because I am a lefty.
Google Preview
Shows an image preview of the pages that Google lists after a search. Helps me decide which links are worth visiting.
Greasemonkey
Run scripts that improve Web pages. I use a Gmail script to remove ads and a Facebook script that removes the results of quizzes.
IE Tab or Safari View
Unfortunately not all organisations create Firefox-friendly pages. But I can run MS Internet Explorer within Firefox or call up Safari with a click on a button with these extensions. I can also have these extensions remember which pages to launch into these browsers.
Speed Dial
Simulates the Opera or Chrome start up page with nine visual shortcuts to favourite Web sites.
Tab Mix Plus
This extension adds some very useful enhancements and features to tabbed browsing.
Xmarks (formerly known as Foxmarks)
Another must-have! This allows me to update my bookmarks in any machine, but have them synchronised all the time. Any bookmarks I make on the PC show up on my Mac and vice versa.
