Agreed! If we stuck to copyright, there would be very little creative expression.

It's not just a mindset shift among users though. There also needs to be a paradigm shift in the business practices of publishers, media companies and the like.

Interestingly, it's reading your post that I realise we're unconsciously thinking of "copying". Maybe we should start with a mindset change -- from "copying" to "using". Use-rights rather than Copyrights. The difference may be subtle, but quite significant, I feel.

One way might be to avoid phone use and rely on netbooks or iPod Touches instead. That's a route a few schools elsewhere in the world have taken.

The research programme I mentioned makes use of the same brand and model of handset and SIM cards that only allow data access.

But for the most realistic and flexible use, a natural system that relies on social checks and measures might eventually need to evolve in schools. Some universities in the USA use iPhones as clickers, to promote tweeting, to download podcasts, etc. I am sure that there are also thefts and misuse there. My guess is that they adopt what most societies already have in place, e.g., rules for use, penalties for abuse, etc.

The fact of the matter is that kids are already using their phones for social purposes. Why not in education for things like communicating directly with experts, collecting data or real time information, and Googling for information?

The main deterrence of use of mobile phones in school is probably disciplinary considerations. Theft, misuse and even vanity 'phone race' often raised eyebrows of school management.

How can schools handle this dilemma?

I hope they get into the active and collaborative writing activities that I have planned for them. I think this will make or break the course!

Hi Ivan,

Glad to hear that the response was good. I emailed all four of my classes so I would not be surprised if a few of them showed up at the event.

Hi Dr. Tan, thanks for helping to publicise this event. BTW, the preview session received good responses. There were also some NIE teacher trainees as participants. Maybe they were your students. In any case, thanks for passing the word for this event. The library is set to open 4 "live" sessions to public in the next 2 months. Cheers!
