Outside the box

Posted by: ashleytan on: December 30, 2008

A recent article in Wired magazine was one of the more interesting ones I have read in a while. It proposed “How YouTube Changes The Way We Think“.
The central idea was this: When a new tool comes along, people tend to use it based on their previous experiences with existing tools. Thus the potential and [...]

Twitter is getting bigger by the day. Here’s a link to the state of the Twittersphere.
Some folks have come up with a mash-up of sorts of Twitter and del.icio.us. Ingenious!
And Mr Tweet aims to help you connect with relevant tweets.

Clickers

Posted by: ashleytan on: December 25, 2008

The Chronicle reported how a US college used students’ iPhones as clickers. (Apparently this same college provided each freshman with an iPhone. I wouldn’t mind getting an iPhone for Christmas!)
A clicker is an interactive tool, typically used during a lecture. A presenter might ask the audience for feedback or answers to a multiple choice question. [...]

Defined by Dewey

The Web is full of, um, interesting things to do. I recently came across a tool that defined you under the Dewey decimal classification system.
Apparently I am under the category of “Manuscripts” and this is the report of me:

ReadWriteWeb highlighted an add-on to PowerPoint 2007 that allows you to add a ribbon to let you share a presentation in SlideShare.
PowerPoint has become a fact of life even though is it tends to be linear and lecture-oriented. It has its role and place, but I think that teachers and adminstrators rely on it too [...]

Technology use vs. integration

Posted by: ashleytan on: December 22, 2008

This blog entry by Dawson perfectly summarizes the essential differences between technology USE and technology INTEGRATION.

This is a point former colleagues and I used to emphasize [...]

Twitblogs

Posted by: ashleytan on: December 22, 2008

Twitblogs sounds like an insult, doesn’t it? It is actually a service that allows you to go beyond the 140-character limit of Twitter… if you need to. According to their Web site,  you already have a Twitblog account if you have a Twitter account!
But I am not sure what to think about this service. Twitter [...]

The big picture

Posted by: ashleytan on: December 20, 2008

The year 2008 is coming to a close and the Boston Chronicle has a three-day feature called “The Big Picture”.
It highlights select events of the year in photos. Anyone who cannot see why a picture paints a thousand words needs to look at the feature and question their belief in traditional literacy.
The big picture is [...]

The writing’s on the wall (and your phone)

Posted by: ashleytan on: December 19, 2008

Pew Internet, surveyed “578 leading Internet activists, builders, and commentators and 618 additional stakeholders (1,196 respondents)” and asked them what they thought the Internet would look like in 2020. Most agreed (77%) that the future of Web surfing would be via the mobile phone. And 55% thought that virtual and augmented reality would, well, become [...]

Lifelong learner

Kirk Douglas, best known as an actor (Spartacus anyone?), not so well known as a blogger.
But a blogger he is and at the age of 92! This Reuters article reports that he started blogging in 2007.
Now that’s a lifelong learner!
