According to IBM, in five years you might be surfing the WWW using your voice. And you may have to thank India for this.

Web 2.0 @ Mumbai

Posted by: ashleytan on: November 29, 2008

Web 2.0 was used to good effect during the 2004 tsunami and the 2008 US Presidential election. But I think that its use has stepped up a level with the tragic Mumbai attacks.

Red Rover

Posted by: ashleytan on: November 28, 2008

Ever considered some educational use of social networking tool like Facebook? I have.
Well, Red Rover claims to have that covered. Red Rover says that it will help learners connect with one another based on their interests and whether or not they already have Facebook profiles.
I’l have to examine this tool in greater detail. Perhaps I [...]

Educational Twittering?

Posted by: ashleytan on: November 27, 2008

I used to think that Twitter was a complete waste of time. Why would anyone want to microblog within a limit of 140 characters?
But Twitter has gained momentum and some educators have suggested its value and have offered ideas for teaching and learning. One page I bookedmarked a while ago is “Twitter for Academia“. Another [...]

Web 2.0 @ Work

Posted by: ashleytan on: November 26, 2008

Every day I get at least one article via RSS that suggests the value of Web 2.0 at work.
I ignore most of them because they rarely suggest concrete ideas. I also think that the way they might be used at work differs markedly from how they might be used in education.

Along came an article from [...]

The MacArthur Foundation just released the results of a three-year ethnographic study entitled “Living and learning with new media: Summary of findings from the Digital Youth Project”.
The study had two main research questions:

How do these practices change the dynamics of youth-adult negotiations over literacy, learning, [...]

Social bookmarking with Diigo

Posted by: ashleytan on: November 24, 2008

I might introduce social bookmarking to my ICT classes next semester (or failing that, an elective another semester). I think this would be a great way to collectively build up resources and knowledge on various topics.
I have been using Furl and have experimented with del.icio.us and Digg. I also introduce these Web 2.0 tools to [...]

Surowiecki’s TED talk

Posted by: ashleytan on: November 22, 2008

James Surowiecki gave a talk at TED.
Who is James Surowiecki? He is the author of “The Wisdom of the Crowds“. I think that anyone with an interest in blogging, collaborative writing with wikis, and social networking should read this book!
What is TED? Here is the description from the TED Website: TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, [...]

Wireless for good reason

Posted by: ashleytan on: November 21, 2008

In previous entries [1] [2], I talked about how schools could create anytime-anywhere, secure wireless networks instead of relying on computer labs or special media labs. I also described how students could be given laptops or netbooks on a 1:1 ratio. If not, they could adopt mobile labs like the ones Apple has been offering [...]

Edublog’s university of blogs

Posted by: ashleytan on: November 20, 2008

Edublogs recently announced “The University of Blogs“. Unfortunately, you can’t get a degree in blogging here!
The University of Blogs is actually a demonstration of a multi-blog management tool. Take a look at the video at the link above to find out about some nifty features. From an educator’s and administrator’s point of view, I think [...]
