Another dot in the blogosphere?

Technology illiteracy is a sin?

What does it take to win Edublog awards for the “most influential post” or the “best group blog” in 2007? Here are two examples.

I found Terry Freedman, who wrote in his Techlearning blog:

  • “All educators must achieve a basic level of technological capability.”
  • “People who do not meet the criterion of #1 should be embarrassed, not proud, to say so in public.”
  • “Headteachers and Principals who have staff who are technologically-illiterate should be held to account.”
  • “School inspectors who are technologically illiterate should be encouraged to find alternative employment.”

Strong words indeed.

In his response, another blogger named Karl Fisch declared “If a teacher today is not technologically literate – and is unwilling to make the effort to learn more – it’s equivalent to a teacher 30 years ago who didn’t know how to read and write.”

But just what is a “basic level of technological capability”? I also wonder what my colleagues and the teachers I know think about those rants.

All I can say is, I can relate to Fisch’s philosophy on learning by doing and being a model of lifelong learning. Web 2.0 and other technologies are here to stay. They will continue to evolve and it is our responsibility to learn how to use them in order to be more relevant as educators.
